I use and indeed, do sell this device too.
I find the UK database quite extensive, no database will have everything,
but it is pretty good I have to say.
Also, you can teach it not only the product ID, but also cooking
instructions etc. Just record all your info if the tin or packet is not on
the database, then when you scan in future, your own recording is played.
Another really useful feature is you can scan a product and have the device
just give you the bar code number. Then you can look it up on your phone
and get the details.
Finally, Inventory Mode can tell you how many of an item you have in your
cupboard.
Oh and you can update the bar code database over the network, if you have
Wi-Fi broadband, as you can the software itself.
It's a lot more useful than some realise.

I would like to know how extensive the UK database is on the Galaxy i.d mate
bar code reader? I do have an iPhone but wondered how much quicker and
easier this would be as at times it takes me an age to find some bar codes
