Hi Martin, The only other thing I can suggest is to check your view menu,
especially the toolbars menu, as it sounds like the search bar is turned on.
Also, try downloading a tool called TweakUI, this can disable search in
Explorer altogether which should solve your problem.

using My Computer or Windows Explorer, if you either use control e or check
the search tool bar in the tool bars submenu, the Windows search dialog
opens. 
However, in XP Home, at least on my machine, the search dialog does not come
up the next time you run Windows Explorer or My Computer.  It is also not
checked in the tool bars submenu.  What you are describing appears to
indicate that you see this search feature every time you open a folder.  Try
turning it off with control e.
