Here ya go guys. Installing Vista without sighted help. One thing this guy doesn't mention is that Narrator will only speak to you providing Vista has soundcard drivers and installs them during the install process. For people that use onboard I'd say your good to go, Creative more than likely, other cards no idea. I'm holding till SP1 comes out. Sure it'll patcha few bugs but I just bought my XP Pro licence last September and I'd be buying OEM, which would result in me voding my XP key when i install Vista. I can't stress enough that you are going to have patient. I began the process by making sure that I had my CDs for software that I wanted to install after the system was up and running. Also make sure that you have your installation disks for devices which you may have added to your computer since you purchased the system. With the computer running and your screen reader running insert the Windows Vista DVD in to the DVD drive and close the drawer and wait. The Vista installer should start. Your screen reader will read the screen to you. I chose a clean install not the upgrade option. I have found that an upgrade is not as stable as a clean install. Follow the install process which will ask you for your key and the type of install you desire. After the installation begins leave it alone to run. This will take quite sometime because it is quite a large system. The install will run for a while and then the computer will restart. Leave it alone, be patient. Listen for hard disk activity. After the hard disk activity stops, do a Windows key with 'U' key combination followed by an alt 'N' key combination. You will hear Narrator start. You can spend a bit of time making adjustments to Narrator and becoming familiar with its access keys. Switch back to the install by alt tabbing. You should be at the place where you need to set up an account. This account will have all administrative rights. I called it Owner. After you have set up this account and are in to the system, do a Windows key 'R' key combination. Type 'control panel' in the edit field and enter. In the control panel navigate to User Accounts and enter. This will give you a menu of options. If you are currently using the Jaws beta you need to turn user accounts off. If you are running WinEyes you do not have to do this. You will be asked if you want to continue. Answer yews if this is what you wish to do. You will need to restart the computer. When you hear the new Windows tune do an Windows key 'U' to get Narrator running again. Logon to the system with the user and password you previously created. You now are ready to install your screen reader of choice. The rest of the process of installing software is straight forward. I ain't as good as I once was, but I am as good once as I ever was. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "blind-vista" group.
