I heard something about this Douglas. Sygate being acquired by symantec. Given that, I'm glad you've urged caution. I'll look at Kerio firewall as well.

Whilst I agree entirely with what Joe says about Sygate, do bear in mind
that Sygate is now owned by Symantec and I would be very surprised if it
does not become (like the Norton products) very large and resource
intensive.
I have used Sygate for several years but I am currently exploring Kerio for
that very reason.

That's just great!  Probably what I need as, you can have too many
internet security things like; anti-spam and personal privacy stuff.
That's when it gets too much for me to handle and, has an effect on my
