Hi Ibrahim,
I’m not sure I’m afraid. I haven’t used this service. I either use Jaws
normally to read or convert to text to speech using Balabolka on my
machine. If I do try their audio conversion I will give feedback. But
why not drop Philip a line, he is pretty responsive and as I said
willing to discuss your specific needs. Their address is
support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. You could tell them you heard of them
from me, and that your circumstances are quite similar to mine. I guess
Philip has learned a little more about what we require from the couple
of books I’ve done with them. If you have any other questions I’m happy
to help where I can.
HTH.

Thanks for your explanation, sound like you do some pretty weighty reading
there my friend *smile*, just one more thing, do you know how they produce
audio books? They describe this service on their website but don't give much
more info and there are no samples on the website for me to listen to.
Thanks.

Hi Ibrahim,
Yes, they do non-destructive scanning to preserve the originals, and they have
options for yellowed pages - old books. Though I haven’t had the need to use
such services.
I do use Kindle but not all books I read are available in e-format
unfortunately; that would’ve made life that little bit easier! Example:
Before European Hegemony by Prof. Janet Lippman Abu-Lughod. Few of the books I
read are not your everyday read, others are older books you see.
For novels and pastime reading I use Audible.
Hope that answers your question.
Best,
Amro

I've had a look at their site, I've got several print game manuals and strategy
guides now sadly long out of print but very rare and collectable. Do you know
if they can do a non-destructive service where they return these items to
sender? These are collectors items so I wouldn't want to have them destroyed.
Also, if you don't mind my asking, why do you choose to send books you purchase
in print form rather than downloading said books from services like Apple Books
or Kindle?
Thanks, Ibrahim.

That’s precisely what they do, Barry! You post to them the material you need
digitising be it books or documents, and also you can by the book online and
have it shipped to them directly saving on postage cost and time. That’s what I
did with the latest book I bought from WHSmith. They offer destructive and
non-destructive scans. You can either only scan to image, scan and convert to
searchable PDF (that’s accessible PDF to us), or go all the way and get back
your book in both accessible PDF and Word formats. And they do conversion to
audio as well, but I haven’t tried that as I’ve both my trusted Jaws and
Balabolka if I need to do that.
Also, they can run OCR and convert to Word any digital material you have. And
there are more things they can do; it’s all on their website.
For example, one service I found extremely helpful is page numbers and headings
and sub-headings removal from the scanned version of a book.
Jaws is not intelligent enough to skip reading these, and I personally find
Jaws reading them distracting, especially in ‘Say All’ reading mode. Though I
understand that the possibility of removing these depends on where they are
located on the page, but Philip and his team can advise on that.
The thing is, I have ReadIris 17 Corporate edition; a good OCR programme, and I
tried ABBYY Finereader for a month, but couldn’t achieve the same results even
with books that were already in PDF image format. Maybe I didn’t persevere
enough, or because of my lack of experience, but frankly with their very
reasonable prices I might as well save myself the bother and leave it to the
experts as they say. And I wouldn’t know where to begin with removing page
numbers from the scanned image!
And ah, they do OCR in many different languages, I’m going to try doing my next
Arabic book with them and see how they fare.
Best,
Amro

Subject: [access-uk] FYI, scanning service
Hope this is fine to post, but I’ve used an online shop to scan some books and
I was really happy with their service I wrote this below review on their
website. Thought some of you might find this info helpful as most of us require
these services.
‘I am in constant need of book scanning and OCR services. Digitize My Books
<https://www.digitisemybooks.co.uk/> has done the job to a very high standard,
professionally, and in a timely fashion. And more importantly, they were willing to
discuss my particular requirements, offer solutions, and suggest the best course of
action. For instance, their page number removal service is noteworthy. All this done
for a really competitive price and with a pleasant manner.
This is an online shop with your local shop feel! Thank you Philip and team.
Highly recommended.’
