Hay Jackie and all
I am the first to gripe but please let me say that at my home I had a sighted employee from the company that sold me my Index Brailler, setting it up etc and it was totally irrelevant to me whether he could read braille or not, main thing was that I could and I simply wanted the computer and machine talking to each other. That done, I was very pleased. I have a recollection indeed of him orientating himself to Braille paper removed from the machine but he was able to recognise that he was holding a sheet upsidedown and turned it the correct way before handing it to me. That again was sufficient. Over the phone another staff member, possibly not visually impaired did an excellent job sorting drivers on my mobile phone while I controlled the Focus Blue at my end. We did this remotely and again a knowledge of Braille was not necessary on his part, essential for me though. Finally I had yet another person from the company while at my home, kindly agree to put Talks on my phone for me. He did not know at first what was required of him, 'Fear not, I told him, I know what I want, indeed it is your vision I require as a blind person. I will instruct you.". I did and we got the task done together. I am all for blind people in employment but there are times when a blind person can support a sighted person when dealing with equipment for the blind and visa versa too where the sighted person can assist the blind person. Sounds like you are having fantastic time in your new work in Ireland Jackie which is absolutely great and I wish you well. Maybe one day when I attend an exhibition for the blind there our paths will cross Lol!

Hi Derek

I can only respond diplomatically by saying that it would have been
appropriate and correct protocol to actually advertise the post to give the best opportunity to the best candidate. Sadly, this did not happen despite my attempts to persuade management to at least advertise in the normal way.
But, as Mr Tookey has stated, he has someone who can do the job without
necessarily being in the office, and if this works for S and S, then that is their call. I chose to leave for lots of reasons, all of which I have been
able to justify and am extremely happy with. I also left in the knowledge
that I did a good job as a Braillist and blind person, and made many friends from my two years as an employee there. Unfortunately, there was nobody in
the whole company who knew grade two Braille at the time of my departure,
which makes rather a mockery of selling blindness products to that intended audience. However, that was then and life for me has much more meaning and
purpose than it has for a long time, so I wish everyone well.

Hi Jackie
Surely it would be bad management if one was to take on A member of staff
on the basis blind.

Staff should never be taken on based on disability, it should Always be
based on ability to do the job, And also is there need for the extra
job?
Clearly in the case of Sight & Sound, they must feel they Have enough
staff now.

As you know Paul, I gave S and S every assistance I could to advertise and
recruit a blind person with good Braille skills to become part of the
company before I left. Sadly, however, nothing was done about it, I moved
away, and thankfully we all appear to be happy with the paths we have taken.

i think it is a great pity that a company the size of sight and sound
chooses not to employ fulltime a blind person in such a role! this calls
into question your commitment to employing blind people in my view! very
poor indeed!

Actually we do have a blind person to demonstrate, train and support
our customer base. We have Jonathan Tyrer, who works UK wide for us in
this role. He is not a full time employee, but he works for us on a
day to day basis and has been successful. He has a very wide
experience base - not just Freedom products, but all software and
hardware and also more recently Apple solutions.

This for me is what we are all about, looking after our customer base,
so if you would like to learn more about the Focus 40 Blue just
contact us and we will do our best to help.

Regards
Glenn

They don't have a blind person like myself to go out and demo, train
and support their Braille products as it currently stands and, in my
honest experience, there is nobody like a Braillist to really
demonstrate what a display or other similar hardware can do.

Ask Sight & Sound Catherine. Sight & Sound are aware that it does not
work with the N97 Mini as I told them. Also informed Freedom
Scientific.
Maybe
it has to do with N97 Mini being a 5th generation phone but it works
well with the other phones. Don't Sight & Sound have a service, well
they did when Jackie worked there, where someone would come out and
show you a Braille display, in that case, the person could try it with
our phone and then you would know before purchasing it. There is a
really nice man at Freedom Scientific who uses the Focus Blue all the
time with his phone. I wrote to him too re the drivers but whether
they do anything about it or not is anyone's guess. While I was
disappointed, I have to say of course that the Focus Blue is excellent
in conjunction with PC also.

Ah. Did you ask the manufacturer about this? Is there a particular
reason why it doesn't work with the n97 mini? Is there any way of
knowing before purchase whether it would work or not. I will have to
ask Sight And Sound about it, but presumably if it didn't work I
could return it for a refund.

Hi,

My BrailleNote PK died recently and I decided it wasn't worth the
price to fix it, it needing a new memory board. So I am tentatively
looking at braille display options. I need either to be able to
write notes on the braille display, or for the display to work with
my Nokia
E5 mobile phone running Talks. Having used an 18 cell display for
some time now I know I would not want to go below that.

Am I right in thinking that the Focus 40 blue, at £1995 from Sight
And Sound, would be the cheapest option?
