Dave,The hard drives that take their power from the computer are fine and very portable so you could take the drive away if you wished ... , but they can be a bit slow, so you may not want to go that route. I personally have a Western Digital plugged into the mains for backing up my PC. I haven't had it that long so won't tell you that it's definitely great. In fact, I will say that I find it infuriating that, when I reboot, the drive doesn't always get turned on and I can't really work out the sequence, when I need to turn it off and then on, so that it's always consistent. ...
I didn't have this problem with my last drive, though I can't remember which that was at present. (Insanity catching up!)

That is the physical size of the drive. Obviously the two and a half are smaller. That is the kind of thing I need to know. One question which someone may be able to answer. Some drives are quoted as two and a half inches and others are quoted as three and a half inches. What does this refer to? Simply plug the USB2in and off you go. hth Mark Threadgold The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act... -----Original Message-----From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf OfDavid Russell Sent: 07 December 2007 08:26 To: Access-Uk@Freelists. Org Subject: [access-uk] External hard drive Hi Folks, I am considering purchasing an external hard drive for my pc in order toback up everything just in case of pc failure. I am amazed to find that youcan now get up to a 500 GB drive for just over £70. I have even found onefor under thirty pounds but I have never heard of the manufacturer, so willnot be taking a chance on that one. I want one which is easy to use, external rather than internal, and runs from a normal USB connection. Is there anything else I should particularly look for and are there any manufacturers people have had good experiences with. Freecom seem to get good reviews. any thoughts would be appreciated.
