Hi Andy, There's one thing to get complete right before you begin. You say the have "purchased the correct Inthernet cables". (Actually, it "Ethernet") However the two scenarios you are considering do NOT use the same cables. For direct PC to PC you need one Ethernet CROSSOVER cable. To connect via the router, you need a standard Ethernet straight through patch cable - one for each PV to the router. Which do you have? Overall, I'd suggest that the router method is probably best all round, but we can go into that in more detail when we know what cables you have. Thanks everyone for their comments on various external hard drives and=20 suppliers. I've been given this matter a lot of thought and decided that as I wish the=20 drive only to move files from one computer to another and perhaps a back-up=20 of these files, I'd be just as well creating a network between both my=20 computers instead. I have an XP Home computer and an XP Media Center computer and I have=20 purchased the correct Inthernet cables. In fact I have two choices. One is to connect both computers together directly with one of my Inthernet=20 cables and the other option, is to plug both into my Belkin Router and=20 create a network. I thought that there was no need to purchase an external hard drive while I=20 had two computers. Unfortunately, I've attempted several times with no success to link both=20 computers using either of the above options. Rick from the BCT List has a=20 tutorial in creating a Network, but for some reason, I've had no luck=20 following this. So if there is anyone who could talk me through the process of either=20 connecting both computers directly or setting up a Network, I'd be very=20 grateful for your assistance. Best wishes.
