this is to do with the cell format.

In the cell in question, press:
ctrl+1
this opens the format environment.
press tab
you will probably hear 'general' spoken.
Cursor down till you hear 'date' - this may be preceded by an example.
Tab again
if you now cursor up and down you will hear the different formats of
date spoken.
