Hi Colin,

The way that I have read your query is that you have a comment in a cell as 
opposed to a drop down list.  A comment is usually a small triangle (arrow 
head) in the top right hand corner of the cell. In this case you need to hold 
down the shift key and press function key 2 (F2), which will open the comment 
box for reading.   Press the Esc key when finished to close.
