Hi Mark

Many Thanks. Unfortunately, Word Perfect for DOS (v5.1) appears only to
accept Characters from the Keyboard or their ASCII Codes.

The "Escape Character" is a hangover from the weird and wonderful DOS Black
Art of ANSI Description of Displayed Graphics - I only barely understood it
in the 80s and can hardly remember it at all now!

As removing so many ^[4 and ^[5 (one of each on each line) manually will be
tedious and take for ever, unless I can find some way acceptable to WP51 of
describing the "Escape Character" (a Single Character even though displayed
as a Double Character), it looks as if I will just have to put up with
having this 'clutter' spoken out whenever I 'read' the Text File.

Best Wishes

Bi from Keith

KEITH,

Can you not copy the characters from the document and paste them into the
find field, then leave the replace field blank? Word can be used this way,
but don't know about word perfect or the particular characters involved.

hth,
Mark

Subject: [access-uk] Escape Character and "Ample Notice"

18 July 2004

Hi Listers

Being a Luddite, I still use a MS-DOS Program ("Ample Notice" from Granny's
Old Fashioned Software) for my Diary. Recently, I have found a need to be
able to refer to my Diary when away from the PC and, therefore, I have
amended the Configuration File (config.cal) to send the Output to a Text
File instead of the Printer - I have no Sight whatsoever and, therefore, I
am unlikely ever to want a Paper Printout.

The Text File is usable for the purpose for which I want it but there is a
'slight niggle' in that the Text File is littered with Printer Codes i.e.
the Escape Character (^[) followed by another Character. I have tried
loading the Text File into Word Perfect for DOS (v5.1) so as to use the Find
and Replace Function to remove these 'annoying' Codes without success. I
have entered ^ and[ as normal and even used the ASCII Definitions 0094 (^)
and 0091 ([) without success - yet I can remove them individually by using
the Delete Key but this is rather impracticable as there are at least
several hundred if not thousand! Is there an ASCII Code for the Escape
Character and, if so, what?

Alternatively, does anyone know whether there is a Line which I can include
in the Configuration File of "Ample Notice" to prevent these dratted Codes
being generated in the first place?

Any help appreciated.

Best Wishes
