Hi Steve,
How can we find out? If I thought it was remotely accessible, I'd get one,
although Amazon do have a 30 day money back thing, so I might try anyway.
All the best
Steve

My understanding steve is that it is or certainly will be. It has elements
too of Alexa built in (the speech comprehension engine).

Hi Steve,
Do you know if the Amazon Fire Stick is accessible? I know Fire TV is to
some degree, but the stick?

Hi John and all.
For info - and please call helpline or check our website for more info. But
the below is what we know to be partially or fully accessible (all due to
the work we are doing to make these systems accessible). I do agree with
you that it is frustratingly and painfully slow - but we are doing a great
deal to force the issue.
* Samsung: latest tvs very accessible and are able to record with complete
control over recording (on to a hard drive or similar);
* Panasonic: not as accessible now as Samsung but all key features including
EPGandmain requirements for operation are accessible;
* Latest Apple TV: is not recordable but does include lots of catch up tv
options including bbc iplayer, netflix, NowTV, and of course all itunes
based films and programmes for rent or purchase. Audio-Description is
becoming more available on this platform and is available as part of
thenetflix option for example;
* Fire TV: an offering from Amazonwhich plugs in to a regular tv and gives a
bunch of access including to amazon films etc.. Accessibility is improving
all the time on this platform;
* Virgin TV: for those with a smartphone, the app is accessible andgives
access to more or less the entire box functionality - certainly EPG,
recordings and recordability,catch up services (paid and unpaid) etc;
* Sky TV: already mentioned; not as exhaustive at this stage as the virgin
App but works reasonably well.
Additionally:
* We have been engaging with the regulator to try to secure accessibility as
part of manufactured product - asyou may know, manufacturers don't fall
under the regular accessibility legislation but we are nonetheless focussed
on access to broadcasting. We areawaiting the results of a
consultationexercise;
* Android based TV: a number of manufacturers have announced using Android
as the software that runs their tv sets. We are working with them and
Google to bring about the ability to use the accessibility features inside
android. One of the issues is that, as currently specified, elements of the
platform do not permit manufacturers to access or amend them and this is
part of the challenge we are trying to address.
So, i do agree - it is slow and difficult - but we are doing a great deal to
bring about change in this space.

sadly the powers that be like rnib do nothing with regards to blind people
and tv access. for me at this moment in time until i get my mortgage off sky
at ?80 per month is far too expensive. i understand there are other packages
about but in today's techie world it seems so sad a blind person cannot
record anything other than the tvonics other than paying out loads or should
i say more cash again.

There used to be one for around ?70 called Sky Talker, but I don't
know if
thing.
Sky have really got away with not providing accessibility on their
boxes unless you can use one of the apps. I personally think Ofcom
should have come down on them and other providers like Virgin Media
really hard given what they charge people. Still, a rant for another
time and place! (smile.)
