clicking ones fingers now and again is just as effectice(providing one has a free hand of course) adding a click device to a long cane would just jump the price up a notch ( and probably a big one too ).

Howabout this for an idea. for us long cane users, there could be a device built into the handle of the cane which would make a clicking sound but only when you pressed a button to do so.

hi there carol how interesting also i find if i have a hat on my echo location is not half as good so it's not the ears it's through the head somehow. some years ago guide dogs said they would be looking in to how we do this and as alison i think it was said we have done it all these years without thinking about it. but to do it without a cane or dog would be nai imposible for me it is a real help though in getting around.

Likewise, Steve, and I'm also able to judge a person's height ...

Snow is the killer, I think, because you lose kerbs as well as the echo
going!

I was interested one night when, out of the ordinary routine, I had to
go to a friend's house in the middle of the night. This was down a path
which, although quite narrow and it was gravel, the path itself wasn't
particularly (shut in). However, in the middle of the night I was much
more conscious of the density of that path and it was as if it was
really gloomy! (I don't see dark and light so I just make of that what I
do!--an interesting experience!)
