[access-uk] Re: Echolocation anyone?

Well I think it would be interesting if someone would research artificial
sound sources for echo location (electronic clickers you might say). I would
imagine that sound sources with different audio characteristics (pitch,
directionality etc)  and in different positions (stick-mounted, or at
different points on the body) might give different results; and electronics
would give a lot more flexibility than finger- or tongue-clicking with
regard to volume, frequency of clicks etc.

Howabout this for an idea. for us long cane users, there could be a device
built into the handle of the cane which would make a clicking sound but only
when you pressed a button to do so.

hi there carol how interesting also i find if i have a hat on my echo
location is not half as good so it's not the ears it's through the head
somehow. some years ago guide dogs said they would be looking in to how we
do this and as alison i think it was said we have done it all these years
without thinking about it. but to do it without a cane or dog would be nai
imposible for me it is a real help though in getting around.

Likewise, Steve, and I'm also able to judge a person's height ...

Snow is the killer, I think, because you lose kerbs as well as the
echo going!

I was interested one night when, out of the ordinary routine, I had to
go to a friend's house in the middle of the night. This was down a
path which, although quite narrow and it was gravel, the path itself
wasn't particularly (shut in). However, in the middle of the night I
was much more conscious of the density of that path and it was as if
it was really gloomy! (I don't see dark and light so I just make of
that what I do!--an interesting experience!)

interesting topic of discussion, another factor that can affect the
viability of echo location  is chabnges in atmospheric pressure as this
can
alter the way sound travels to a lesser or greater degree.

could
never do it without a dog or a cane to me if someone says they can then
they
must have some small amount of sight. well or very very good hearing
indeed.

Hi. Did you ever try this app? All I found was a bunch of hype, a link
to a web site with even more hype and some unlabelled buttons.  It
takes a special kind of ineptitude to include unlabelled buttons in an
app aimed squarely at the blind.
