Is there a way of actually determining whether or not it needs updating
apart from using dxdiag? I'd hate to over-ride anything if it didn't
need installing.

Cheers,

I believe the latest is DirectX 9. I was installing a program that
required version 9 and it gave me a button which took me directly to the
link of version 9 for download. Peter
