Mandy I certainly wouldn't try to persuad you to do something that
mightn't work out well for your needs in the future.

Certainly switching to Window-Eyes does involve some investment in
time, not to mention money, but GW do ease that financial burden now
with their installment plan. Certainly Window-Eyes will work with any
flavour of Vista, and right now. Its been said here before, and I'll
second it, that holding back on Vista at the moment, whatever screen
reader you're using, is a good idea. W-E does have a manual and lots
of generous support, both telephone and via their own email list and
the UK jawsaholics list, and it does have a better help system in the
form of the keyboard describer feature. Also, for those more
comfortuble staying with the JFW keyboard layout there is the
Window-Eyes JAWS keyboard layout. Finally, you seem to suggest that
maybe the money you've got hold of might include an SMA and that is
good value for money.

I could understand you sticking with what you know. I don't know if
FS's policy on ordinary vs. Pro JAWS has been finally settled
price-wise, but I know speculation is that the two lower end versions
of Vista will probably run on the home or whatever edition of JAWS is
that's not "Pro". Arguably, many visual features of Vista will be
irrelivant for screen reader users, and I believe the transparancy
effect, Aero, or whatever its called, will be disabled in the registry
anyway when a screen reader is installed. I had heard JAWS for Vista
should be with us now, in which case, if true, you should know more
definitely where you stand.

I guess that if you are feeling morally dubious about changing your
mind, you could contact the people who've given you the money to
re-negotiate its use.

I'm far from being an expert on the technicalities of what it takes to
run VISTA but from what I hear then maybe a gig of RAM at the least is
called for, and GW Micro themselves I think I'm right in saying have
mentioned 2 gig as desirable.

Obviously others will comment, but whatever you decide Mandy, I wish
you all the best, whatever direction you decide to go.

Cheers,

From Ray

Hi All.

If it isn't one thing it's another.

I'm not asking anybody to solve this morally for me: I just want to
know a couple of things and the explanation around it all is just an
aside.

I've been trying out Window-Eyes with the evaluation copy and although
initially very impressed: just recently I've been less sure although
admittedly I haven't put in the tie to learn all about it just been
getting on with the things I usually do on the computer and trying to
do
them with Window-Eyes.

I've been given a cheque for =A3720 to purchase Window-Eyes and =
upgrades,
now I am not sure.

I bought that little Dell laptop from Ebay which is below standard
speed
wise for me and am wondering whether to purchase a laptop instead but
would only buy one that is small and has XP home with the capacity for
Vista later on.

How likely is it that we will have to purchase Jaws pro to use vista?

Also: does anybody know which models of laptop might be available
with
XP Home but Vista capable? The memory and speed has to be very much
greater doesn't it?

Mandy.
