Thanks Christine, it sounds a very up hill struggle and I wish you all the best with the DDA action against Learn Direct. The government's good at doing the talk but not when it comes to implementing the action to give disabled people equality. regards David Quarmby quarmby@xxxxxxxxxxxx 07736 087019 0207 217 8023 ----- Original Message ----- From: Christine Weetman To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 12:12 PM Subject: [access-uk] David Q, and DDA. Yes I am, that is my point really, the goverment makes rules they can't keep and that to me is totally unacceptable. The course I am Hoping to complete is OCR level one which i started in evening class at our local mainstream college where I got 2 certificates, I need the other 3 so I can then move on to ECDL. Learn direct have put me on IT1 electronic comunication. Email and internet. I don't believe it is the right thing, but those Stupid goverment employees assured me it was. I have to complete the whole thing by September or I am out of time and my previous year of struggling to and from college is all a waste of time. I can't continue at college as they told me it wasn't possible with their slow internet connection etc. I should have had a support worker at college also, but no-one wanted to support me as they had never worked with a totally blind person using speech only. I was helped by the Technical Assessor and supporting wasn't his job, he just got curious as to whether I/he could do it, we worked together very nicely, but it was one Heck of a challenge for us both as I was brand new to the computer, so anything I do in word processing he taught me...Having said That, I never do use anything I did at college! My son showed me how to send and receive emails and started me off looking at a website, because I made a deal with him that when I could use email I would get him broadband! lol Then another deal to show me how to make a CD (copy) and I upgraded to faster broadband which enabled him to network our families 4 computers so we can all use internet as the same time! I want to know how to use the Search, make and read a data base and how to read and use a calendar on the computer. Don't want much do I? I don't need qualifications as I am only a mum/house wife, but I feel very Strongly about the DDA and people in working possitions who seem to want to Exclude an enthusiastic person from doing something. Are you considering DDA action as well as publicity on this one Christine. I would love to know more details about the Learn Direct course you mention. regards David Quarmby quarmby@xxxxxxxxxxxx 07736 087019 0207 217 8023 ----- Original Message ----- From: Christine Weetman To: "Undisclosed-Recipient:;"@freelists.org Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 12:49 AM Subject: [access-uk] My day! Hi there, I am here, been out all day though and just back checking emails now. Know what!? I am Sick and Fed-up tonight, just had an email from our local learn direct centre, I signed up for a course with them last year, should have completed my first option December, but after they said I would be able to access my course I found it was a flash image. Totally useless for me a totally blind person! I found the RNIB had the necessary to enable me to do the course, but learn direct won't buy the necessary. This company is owned/run by our goverment who has brought out Disability Discrimination rules, these people are breaking! I am taking it to the national papers next Tuesday if they haven't sorted things out. Doing the computing course isn't essential for me, but a challenge, but it maybe for someone else, so I intend to see this to the end! Wish me luck in getting sorted out for the sake of other VI people?
