GoldWave will do this perfectly well, but, of course, you still need to have
all the cassettes play in real time.
If the cassettes are 4-track Library of Congress format, play on a normal
cassette stereo deck into your pc recording both chanels at the same time
but separately, via GW.
Now, if you think of the tracks on the tape like a dual carridge way with
two lanes on each side, the leftmost lane is side 1 the righr way round, the
right-most lane on the other side is side2 the right way round. The right
lane playing when recording side 1 i.e the lane nearest the central verge is
the other lane from side 2 backwards and when recording side 2, the right
lane i.e the lane nearest the central verge is the other one for side 1
backwards.
Therefore, in GW, all you need do is, when processing side1, only process
the right chanel, i.e it needs to be reversed, the same is true on side 2.
You then join the right chanel from side 1 to the end of the left on side 2
and the right from side 2 to the end of the left from side 1.
If the recordings are fully Library of Congress format, they will also be
half-speed, so by playing on a standard stereo deck they will be double
speed. When you have joined tracks as outlined above, you then put them all
through the pitch function which is on the effects menu, use the precet
labeled down an octave.
Now, you can edit or whatever you desire - such as silence reduce, time
warp, if you time warp, use the similarity function, it is in my view by far
and away the best of the three available but realize it will take a long
time to process the whole set of tracks and I would suggest set the scale
factor, currently on the first similarity preset 150%, to, say, 105% on,
say, the first five minutes, play this and if it sounds ok to you, undo and
then redo the whole lot. You may be able to run the same setting again, it
is better to time-warp in small increments rather than one large one which
may have strange effects on the sound.
