Adrien

What John has just said is true.

However it is possible to get the items in the control into a single column of sorted items by re-sizing the window to make it sufficiently narrow that the view changes to a list with small icons.

To do this without using the mouse to grab the right edge of the window:

1. In the control panel, press ALT+Space Bar to bring up the system menu.
2. Scroll down the system menu until you find 'resize' and select it with a press of return.
3. Press the left arrow key to narrow the window.
4. Press 'escape' to get out of resizing mode.

Don't forget the escape press to exit sizing mode!

The changed width persists between openings of the control panel. You may have to experiment to get the right width.

However I guess if you get the window quite narrow, so much so that the description of each item is off the right edge of the list, your screen-reader will still say the whole entry.

I have done this myself this afternoon after talking with a sighted friend on TeamTalk about this very issue. The lack of a classic view for control panel is the only thing with the new Win7 interface that annoys me.

Adrian,

The control panel is actually in alphabetical order when 'small icons' is
selected. However, it is not possible to choose the 'list' option and
consequently the window is separated into three columns. So, if you want to
quick search for, say, 'folder options', then press the 'f' key which will take
you to 'flash player' as this is the first occurrence of items beginning with
'f'. press the right cursor key which will take you to 'folder options'. As the
cursor key does not wrap, it will stay on 'folder options' until you either
press the left cursor key or up or down cursor keys. Just remember that there
are 3 items per row, so if it is not on that row, then it is probably on the
next row down.

HTH.

It's not available, that's what I was saying, it'll be better if it was
possible. Otherwise I find the icons a bit jumbled up.

Hi

The control panel in small icons is a jumble, I think it should be sorted in to
alphabetical order once you have changed to small icons.

Mike the guy was OK but I could tell that a hearing impaired person (did not
think when posting the link) might have had difficulty in hearing him. He was
of course demonstrating it visually. It was interesting though as I then went
on to read Mo's response to you giving same instructions. Now I tend to just
tab around and find it OK but I guess you found all that too slow. May have a
look at changing to small icons though to see what that is like. Presumably it
gives you a list form. What is this converter thing
(Dolphin) that you refer to. I use Supernova but have not heard of it.
Cheers, Alfe

Alfie,

The guy in the video is very hard to understand. I guess
English isn't
his first language. But I managed to do it with Mo's
instructions.

The layout of the Control Panel is the only thing so far
that I don't like
about Windows 7. It didn't take me as long as I thought
to get used to
the different interface. I thought I would have a week of
swearing at the
computer but not so far.

The only problem I have had so far is after installing
Dolphin
EasyConverter my SAPI 5 system is totally screwed up.
Can't say I'm
surprised there.

Interesting
though, I might just do that.

Hi Mike.

The closest you're going to get is the small icons view
which displays
everything. go in to control panel and tab until you get
to catagory
button. press space, down arrow to small icons and hit
enter. that
view should be a little more tolerable.

Hello listers

So far I like the interface and have no real problems

one thing I don't like is the Control Panel.

Is there a way in Windows 7 of switching the Control
Panel interface
back to the old classic view?

Thanks for any help.
