What I want to do is to permanentlyhave 12point as the default. I have
managed to get aerial as my default font but for some reason, the change in
size won't stick.

Peter,

You may like to select all of the document to start with, to ensure that
every part of it is the same size, then format various parts as you need
them.

It's easy to get font sizes mixed up, especially if you have chosen
different sizes for different parts of the document one (or have
inadvertently made) more than one in the document.
