Hahahahaha! there's faith for you. Don't hold your breath though. In the meantime I'd make your own assessment of all your access needs, and ensure that you steer them and have sight of the assessment report before it is submitted. That way if there is anything left out, or something you don't fully agree with, you can raise it before it has gone too far. Remember ATW is discretionary, we don't have an entitlement to it, and from my recent experience ATW's incompetence at interpreting a complex assessment can lead them to underfunding the initial approval.

Anyhow, good luck. This is also your opportunity to make an awareness statement too.

Hi James.

Thanks for the information. A few members have pointed me now to the RNIB re scripts.

Regarding my new employers awareness of visual impairment, well, I must admit I'm getting that feeling of arriving from another planet! You know what I mean?

I'll just have to wait until my ATW Assessment is on the way. Hopefully, the RNIB specialist will be aware of problems and hopefully, these will be few. Fingers crossed.

Best wishes.
Andy

Hi Andy

I vaguely remember hearing something about this software on 'In Touch' a
good few months ago. From what I remember, the program in its original
design was inaccessible, and there was concern that the visually impaired
social workers in Glasgow would lose their jobs as a result. However,
someone from RNIB wrote some scripts for the package to make it work with
JAWS. Of
course there are still plenty of things that could go wrong - if you don't
have the version of Carefirst or of JAWS that the scripts were designed for
then you may hit problems! Does your new employer have any experience of
working with visually impaired people? Perhaps that are already aware of
the c that have been made.

Hi Hugh.

Care First is the software which all of the Social Work Departments in
Scotland are currently using. It contains everything that a social worker
would need in terms of completing community care assessments,
correspondence, case notes etc. My new employer is of the view that I
will
be able to link up my own computer to the internal system and use jaws to
access the software, wishful thinking. However, I have no experience of
this software so may be wrong.

Best wishes.
Andy
