Thanks for your help with this I've now reinstalled Office and will
leave it at that.  Only thing not happening now:  when I open an email
it doesn't start reading straight away but I'm sure that's easily
fixable.

Re Jaws problem:  I spoke to Tristram and Will from Sight and Sound and
it's been sorted, it entailed altering screen settings and now all is
well.

I'm not David, but I was going to suggest the same thing.  If you're
just 
wanting to read some Word documents, give it a go.  You certainly can
read 
those done in earlier versions of Word.  (I think that if you write in
them 
you won't get all of the formatting of Word, but I've not had any
trouble 
reading them.)
