I'm not David, but I was going to suggest the same thing.  If you're just 
wanting to read some Word documents, give it a go.  You certainly can read 
those done in earlier versions of Word.  (I think that if you write in them 
you won't get all of the formatting of Word, but I've not had any trouble 
reading them.)
