Thanks for your fair analysis here.

I'm just off to install now. Don't mind using the mouse! <Smiles>

Hi Carol.

Oh, all the utilities with the exception of a couple are
very good, most of them conform to standard windows
controls like dialog boxes and buttons. You might have
difficulties with the main interface though as sometimes
JFW doesn't render it as a web page using the virtual
cursor and some of the utilities, specifically the
performance optimiser need you to use the jaws cursor to
quite an extent. A good over all package which is light
on system resources and accessible as any of the other
utility suites we can use.
All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrahim,

Thanks for this.

So, which utilities do you find the most useful and,
bearing in mind its limitations for a VI, do you think
it's worth the purchase?
I'm about to download the trial anyway.

Hi Carol.

I use a product called Tune Up Utilities even though I'm
a techie and this little toolbox of utilities
automatically and pretty much independently maintains my
computer, cleaning the registry of redundant entries,
removing redundant files and defragmenting my hard
drives. It has plenty of other functions including a
system optimiser which recommends things you can do to
help you maintain your system as well as turning off
unneeded background programs and other things. You can
download a copy from www.tune-up.com and give it a try.
It works reasonably well with JFW, at least well enough
to set it up and run the automated maintenance tasks.
All the best, Ibrahim.

Oops!

Sorry that application seems to have been bought by
norton, if you aren't a fan of that company ( and who
could blame you ) you had better look for another -
sorry old girl.

Hi all,

My 7 year old Windows XP machine is just about dawdling
along and, having done some recent maintenance, I'm now
wondering about next steps.
It's running Jaws 12, has been virus and malware
checked thoroughly and I've run a complete Scandisk. However, though in some ways it appears quite zippy,
after startup of Windows, as various items are being
loaded, it's very sluggish and I'm thinking also that
Outlook Express and Internet Explorer aren't all that
stable. I'm thinking I may have to do a complete
reformat and install of the software but am loath to
do this, of course, so maybe I can get a bit further
before reaching that conclusion.
My questions are as follows:

How might I determine if the hard disk is failing? (Do
I need to carry out all possible maintenance before
reaching such a conclusion?)
Assuming that I probably do, can I uninstall and
re-install Outlook Express and Internet Explorer and
exactly how do I do this and find the latest versions,
please?
I'm not keen to play with the registry but realise it
is probably now very long and unweildy, with mumerous
unwanted entries, since some items have been
uninstalled over the years, so I'd be grateful for
recommendation of a simple but good registry editor
that will do the job without me having to know the
answers myself. Finally, is there anything else I should be doing that
I haven't thought about?
Thanks for any and all help, maybe to keep this old
work horse on the road a little longer! <Smiles>
