Some authors protect their PDF files by not allow content extraction for
accessibility or allow printing of the document. In both cases this scuppers
accessibility. In the case of instruction manuals personally I think this is
fairly reprehensible.

Hi John

I have the same laptop as you, and yes, the same problem with the manual,
it's very annoying.

Hi Richard,

I have a Toshiba Portege R700 and, as with any or most laptops, the speakers
are not brilliant. I use USB headphones which work great with JAWS. As for
the FN key, I am afraid you are stuck with that if you want to use the
laptop keyboard. Myself I use a wireless full size keyboard which avoids the
laptop keyboard and such problems. Yes, it would appear that Toshiba are
particularly fond of locking down their manuals. I have contacted them
several times to ask if they can unlock the manual sufficiently enough to
allow assistive technology to access the text, but they seem blissfully
unaware that this needs to be done to allow vision impaired users and their
assistive technology to access pdf files. No matter how much I explained the
need for this my words fel on stoney ground.

John.

Subject: [access-uk] COMMENT ON TOSH LAPTOP PLEASE

Hi, Have just bought a Toshiba C855-14U 15 inch laptop and should welcome
comment on the following issues:

1. The sound quality of Eloquence from JAWS is awful, as the speakers seem
to vibrate or distort. It's not too bad with music. Anyone had similar
experience or could recommend a laptop with decent screenreader
reproduction?

2. To get the function keys to perform Windows functions you need to press
the Fn key at the same time which is annoying. Anyone know if this can be
changed?

3. The manual is a locked down PDF which I can't read. Any thoughts?
