Thanks Vince and Wizza. That’s put my mind at rest. I’ll give it a go.

Hi, Jim,

I've found CCleaner reliable for a long time, and it has never caused me a
problem.

At its simplest, just run CCleaner and press Alt-R to carry out a junk file
clean. With any luck, this will only take a couple of seconds.

Then press Alt-G for the registry cleaner, which will remove redundant stuff
from your registry. Press alt-S to run it. Again, this should only take a short
time. When it's completed, press Alt-F to save a .reg file that can reverse any
changes that the registry cleaner has made. This is just in case anything goes
wrong. I've never had to use one of these .reg files, but there's always a
first time. If there are no problems, you may see the curious message that
says, "Problem: no issues were found". That's a problem?? In that situation,
the Alt-F key doesn't work because there's nothing to do.

You can go through and customise the lists of items you want CCleaner to
delete. Tab through until you get to one of the lists. Personally, I don't want
saved passwords deleted, so I leave those unchecked. You may or may not want to
have cookies deleted, depending on how you use your system. I don't have any
reason to keep cookies, but you may have reason if you shop or bank online, for
example.

Those are the basics. You may want to explore the Tools and Options buttons to
get to other CCleaner functions, such as editing your startup or uninstalling
programs, though I can't say I've used these, as they duplicate stuff that's
already in Windows,

Vince.

  Hi all,

I’ve installed Ccleaner on my windows 7 system. I’m a bit worried about
running it as I don’t know much about it and when it said all the files will be
permently deleted, I thought i would ask here how to use it safely. . Can
anyone who is using Ccleaner give me some instructions to get started without
me going into unknown territory and causing myself a lot of grief. What should
I do to the setup first before running it? Your help will be most gratefully
accepted and if it’s better to send me the details off list, it would be
appreciated.

  Jim
