Most schools that have purchased a standard CCTV in the past, now prefer to go
down the portable route.
Larger CCTV's tend not to be used by the children because of the weight issue.
Making it difficult to move from room to room. There are, in some instances,
the case of the VI child not wanting to look out of place to the rest of the
class. So will not use a CCTV anyway.

Most VI children will be issued with a Notebook computer and some form of
screen magnification software.

They also tend to be allocated a teaching assistant, who will help them during
lesson time.
In particular with the problem of gaining information from the Blackboard /
Whiteboard.

Schools like the idea of having a complete portable solution for their VI
children. As most have notebooks, they like to have a camera system that
connects to the computer by USB or firewire. This camera needs to be flexible
enough to be used for read/write and often distance to cover Blackboard /
Whiteboard use.

The camera and its software can be set for DirectX use so the screen
magnification software does not magnify the camera image and pixcelate the
picture.

Also you can record from the camera on to hard disk, a complete or part lesson,
the child can then play back the video at their own pace. Maybe after school
hours. Also they can take still images.

The camera software often contains foreground and background colour changing
with all the various options to split the screen, horizontal or vertical. All
the camera controls are provided within the software and can be operated via
keyboard shortcuts or the mouse.

After each lesson the equipment can be moved from room to room without too much
trouble. Then taken home at night.

All counties have a hearing and vision team for schools, each year they apply
for a budget for various equipment. This is then allocated to the child with
the most need.

Often organisations like Blind in Business will raise funds from local business
then purchase a range of equipment for the VI Services, which in tern gets
placed in schools.

Organisations in the South West also raise funds in a similar way to help
children gain access to the equipment they need.
