And if you start listing the shorthand ones then you'll be posting forever as you think of more, unless you still have the book ...

Clive,

If you go into Braille Shorthand dot 5 G for 'get'.

Norman.

Hi Norman,

What about the other religions abreviations, such as Gr for grace, F Th sign
for Faith?

Best,
Clive

Hi,

There was a dot 5 series which was dropped quite a while ago. Jesus and
Christ spring to mind as well as God and Lord!

Norman.

Hello Alison,
Were there such contractions? I began using the UK braille code at first,
but never been taught things like god. You made me curious.

Does anyone remember why they dropped dot 5 g for god, dot 5 c for
Christ
etc.? It isn't as though they allocated these signs elsewhere.

This is an assumption which is not true. Sighted people involved in
the design of UEB are likely to be also involved in the teaching of
Braille.
It
may not be perfect, but it does introduce some degree of logicality to
a system which in its contracted form has grown up in a rather random
fashion.
The quirks of Braille are familiar to me as I have grown to them from
the age of 5. I don't think it would have been quite as easy if I had
been learning from age 50.

Why are sighted people designing a new braille code at all? They won't
use

it.
