Sorry Steve, sighted people don't recognise spellings when they read.
The focus upon the beginning and the end of each word.  The attention is
focused upon the meaning rather than the spelling for the majority of
the time.  To a large extent, it's a matter of guessing built upon the
context and expected pattern.  Furthermore, are you saying that when
braille users use abbreviations they are not aware of the spelling?  Are
you saying that sighted people who abbreviate dept. Street. Ave. don't
know how they are really spelt?  If you look at MS Word's auto correct,
you'll see how many variations have been put in the list so that they
are corrected automatically.  Not forgetting the spell checker, to which
sighted people are just as dependent.  Anyway who said that people who
can't spell are a lesser of a human than you or I?  I mean, in the
scheme of things, what does it matter?

Yes there are those formal occasions when standards are needed but I'm
not likely to make a job application using braille, or to write a letter
to my solicitor.

Think about it for a minute.  At least a sighted person gets to see the
word
knowledge in all its longhand glory.  Braillists however are rarely
exposed
to it, because they tend to learn Grade 2 at a very early age, if they
learn
young, as I did.
