I am sure many people will still use them anyway.  I was taught for example 
that Dear should be written with EA sign r rather than e and A R sign and 
still tend to use this.

If we are going to get rid of these religious signs they should be 
reallocated to words that are more commonly used otherwise getting rid of 
them serves little purpose.

I hadn't thought of that about the Christ sign, though if that word appears
in another faith's religious context couldn't the sign be used?  I think
what I meant is it is not faith specific.
