Hi,
There is a number you can ring (0800) that will allow you to register for the BT privacy caller display service, and additionally you can register for the telephone preference as well. You will need compatible equipment; in the case of a VI person this would be the RNIB caller ID unit.

19/08/2005Trace,
I have the talking caller ID from RNIB as well, and it works very well.
Cobolt Systems have one that has better features.

when I asked them at BT about caller display they didn't seem to know if it was free or if there were hidden charges and how a blind person could access such a thing, think the RNIB do a talking caller display don't they? can you use that with it?

Hi,
Answer 1571 is a complete rip-off to me as it just makes more calls terminate at answerphones - which BT rake in the money off on the minimum call charges. They could have done it a lot better - i.e, given you a personalised greating, or at least given you the basic callminder option, but no that was extra too. If you didn't already know, you can get caller display for free now if you register for BT privacy, though like everything else that is hidden behind several confusing web pages.

Yes Karen, that's certainly right. I've never been a subscriber to BT Broadband. Also I've had 1571 for a few years now. You do not have to reveal your number of course to use it, just like any other BT network service. You only have to reveal your number when setting up the minked mobile text service.
What peeves me about this service, and I should have thought about it when doing it, is that there seems to be no way of turning it on and off from your phone. For that it looks as if you have to use the internet. Maybe switching mobile text linking on-off is reserved for the paid for 1471 service.
Just as a comment, well, yes Andrew, you don't pay for 1571 as such; its thrown in with the line rental. Given Bt's line rental rates these days, I'd say anything that increases the value for money of the rental fee has to be good. We can only hope that with competition Bt might begin to see things this way and start bundling more services into the line rental rather than these rather silly paid-for additions. After all, many of the things we pay for separately with BT are included in mobile line rentals. Just my 2p's worth there, smile. Ray
