By the sound of it as it is reported here, there is every possibility of a
positive outcome at some stage, and we should be jolly thankful, now shut
up!
I have grave concerns about the time frames being given for this
resolution however, and have my suspicions that the delay that the BCAB
and the RNIB appear to have accepted for us on our behalf, isn't anything
to do with technical consideration at all, but more; as was reported
earlier in this thread, an embargo on any codeing to the I player
functionality during the Olympics.
I do not agree that that is acceptable, and I would urge; as a member, the
BCAB to go back to the BBC and challenge this.
If there had been an I player trailer that portrayed the Black community
as being disadvantaged it would be resolved immediately, the Commission
for Equality and Human Rights wouldn't have been so ready to accept a
frankly lame promise that it would be dealt with by mid October!
Jonathon Hassles explanation on 'in touch' was hollow sounding, and what
could we expect from his organisations own broadcasting.
The BCAB board needs to write direct to Eric Huggers, the head of Future
Media and Technology, to express or sincere dissatisfaction with the
difficulties we have encountered with the new I player, stress that having
to wait a further 8 weeks is wholly unacceptable, and point out to him and
their Head of Diversity - Andrea Kalander, that as licence payers we do
not feel that they have discharged their duties to comply with the due
regard for equality of opportunity for disabled people in the manner that
they are obliged to do within the DED.
Jonathon Hassle should be instructed from his superiors to ensure that an
adjustment to the current I player is achieved immeadiately so that
particular sectors of the disabled peoples movement aren't disadvantaged
and systemically discriminated against.
Had Peter White been anymore than a cap dothing, ever so ready to oblige
presenter, the Blind and visually impaired community may have heard a
programme where the interviewee was challenged and asked questions that
the public that they profess to broadcast for, want to hear asked!
One final point, the link to Jonathon Hassles blog doesn't appear to be
correct either, is this someone that we are expected to have faith in?

Good afternoon,
Since I last posted on this matter, BCAB have canvassed members and
received a great deal of useful information. We have also been in close
contact with RNIB, pooling our information and tackling the problem from
different angles.
We have also been in direct contact with the BBC about the I-player.
The BBC welcomed our input and listened closely to our concerns and
recommendations.
We have now received assurances from the BBC that the problems with
the Jump To Position and Volume functions will be resolved by early/mid
October. The nature of both functions makes it difficult to find a
solution
that works for everybody, but the BBC have been collecting data and
researching solutions since the I-player launched and now believe they're
close.
The BBC's Head of User Experience & Accessibility, Jonathan Hassell,
spoke on this week's In Touch. The programme can be found here:

BCAB will be discussing the matter further at our board meeting this
week. The argument that the BBC should not have launched the I-player at
all
with these flaws is reasonable, but we feel that a positive timetable for
resolution has been given by the BBC and we'll be monitoring progress
closely.
