Hi,

We've looked through the set-top box's menu and can find nothing to select a-d. Mind you, I do have an older stb.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi all,
I have tried channel 926 which is indeed BBC1 but there is no Audio Description there. I phoned NTL who say the service does not exist, nor did they know anything about a special remote control.
According to RNIB Broadcasting Department the service may be in some parts of the country, but not in London until 2007.
My immediate reaction is to chop down the trees which stop me receiving Sky and also Freeview and change to one of these services. Unfortunately the trees are subject to a preservation order.

Regards
Philip

Hi Carol

It's a one time set up. Do it once and it's there for every time you watch an AD programme. If you for some reason don't want to have the AD for some particular show watch it on a channel that doesn't have AD for example BBC1 is on 926 as well as a low number I think 1. So with AD watch 926 for a non AD watch 1.

My understanding is you must have the new handset to set up AD for the first time on the system. The old hand set will go so far but will not finalise it into the set because of the missing button.

Hi Roger,

Are you saying that, whether or not you go on to these channels, you
first have to set up to receive AD by going through the menus and that
this setting up can be done with the older handset, even if the correct
wording is not given?

If you're not saying that, could you please try to explain again as I'm
not clear of your explanation to my question. Thanks.

Hi Carol

Can't remember the full details and Tony's off on holiday in Spain until
the
end of next week so can't check with him. But the menu for setting it
all up
goes through until it asks you to press a button to set it' That button
is
not on the hand set but there is one similar. The menu asks for a two
word
button but the hand set only has one of those words as a button so it
was
assumed the correct one. The new hand set has the two word button on it
and
then it worded just fine.

If you're calling NTL take a lot of long patience pills before hand as
you'll need them. The term "Without any product knowledge" was devised
for
them.

Roger,

Can you ascertain from your friend, please, whether he has to have
this new handset because he needs an extra button which has to be
pressed to receive the Audio Description. That's how I would
understand it and am about to contact NTL, so as much information in
advance would be most useful. Thanks.

Hi David et al

A friend has the NTL cable system and is currently receiving AD on
BBC1 and BBC2 at least. He may be getting it on other BBC channels but

I'm not sure
about that. Getting this information from NTL was unbelievably hard as
almost all members of the help section had no knowledge at all of it.
But
being a bit of a persistent so and so he finally succeeded. A rocky
road
lay
ahead. He got sighted help to go through the menu system but it still
didn't
work. Finally he called out an engineer who said he didn't have the
correct
remote hand set. So he now has 2 for his control box as the new one
has
so
many buttons on it he gets lost navigating it.

What he was not told was that the usual BBC channels he uses are in
the very low numbers, mostly single figures but the AD channels are in

the nine hundred series channel numbers. BBC1 is either 916 or 926 I
believe. Whether
it is regional I've no idea but the engineer led him to understand it
was
national. But with the usual misinformation from NTL who knows for
sure.

Subject: [access-uk] Audio Description on NTL

Hi People,

I have heard rumours recently that NTL are shortly to start
broadcasting audio description. Not sure whether this is on Sky
channels or terrestrial channels, nor do I know whether it is in all
regions or only in selected areas. I have phoned NTL but the person
I

spoke to knew nothing about this.

If anyone has any info, I would love to know about it.

David
