Thanks Doris. I was also glad to have confirmation of the filename and your explanation was indeed helpful.

I hope to be installing over the next day or two ... when I can get long enough at the computer at any one stretch that is.

Hi,Douglas,

I was the one posting the direct download link and the file you have is indeed what you want to install on win xp.

To make this a little clearer, audacity is a multiplatform application, that is there are versions for windows, linux (unix) and, I believe Mac. the "win" in the name tells you that it is the windows version of the program and the "unicode" tells you that it is for NT-kernel based versions of widnows as opposed to the "ainsi" version that is for win 9x. Now you can run an "ainsi" version of the program on win NT kernel as long as you don't need to display exotic characters like right to left writing but I think win 9x does not support unicode, which is for displaying those more exotic language character sets.

While ihis is a long-winded explanation for a simple question, I hope it explains the cryptic name of the program a little better. - The number at the end of the file is simplly the version number btw.

Having read several messages earlier this week about Audacity, I decided to
give it a try. I had difficulty in downloading from
http://audacity.sourceforge.net

so I was grateful when someone posted a direct link to the file.

But what I have downloaded has the name
audacity-win-unicode-1.3.4.exe

If anyone could confirm that this is indeed the file I need I would be most
grateful. to install on a Win XP system

Many thanks,

Douglas
