I think Legally blind is a pointless term because it needs further clarification to anyone who isn't in the professional know. If you have some sight, however little, you are partially sighted. If you have no sight, you are blind.

Alexander that is about the best discussion on the topic of visual impairment that I have heard. I like your term, the American one, legally blind. People are just not wanting to say 'blind' and those with residual vision do not want to think of themselves as 'blind' but the term 'legally blind' is excellent. I have residual vision and in 1975 prior to starting work it was recommended to me that I go on the Blind Register for Employment purposes. This seemed a good idea as there were more advantages (if that is what you can call them!) than being on the Partially Sighted Register.

Hi Léonie, Iain and all,

I'm coming in on this thread following Iain's message and having not seen the beginning of the thread as an original message, but I'd like to make the point that while the point made in Iain's message to which I am replying may be valid for some people, who have had no sight change since being registered, in my own case, as I have some residual vision which I gained after being registered blind, I do wish that the UK would adopt the American term Legally blind, to refer to those who have less than partial sight but have not lost it all, or in my case, those who have been registered blind but have gained a limited amount of useful vision while not gaining enough to be registered partially sighted.
