A number of these types of devices were covered on last weeks gadget show,
Sunday evenings, channel4 I think.
One was a programmeable remote control which could be coupled with any number
of wall plugs, each of the 4 buttons on the unit could control a subset of the
plugs in your house - so for example button one could control power on and off
everything in your office, button your sitting room etc.
Not sure about prices.

Ray, George and all:

Free from B Gas today I received a power saver which, once set up, will shut
down whatever is plugged into 4 of the six sockets, when the infra-red remote
control is activated and vice versa.
This strikes me that it could be more effective!

Hi Ray,

Their web site makes the statement, “Lowest standby power of just 0.4 of a watt
saving an average 35 watts per hour depending on the number of connected
peripherals. This product can pay for itself in less than a year of use!”.

To me this is akin to these ISP comments about broadband speed when they say
“Up to 8 megabtyes” – emphasis on the “Up to”.

So how does one define “depending on the number of peripherals”?

Call me a “Tight fisted Jock”, but what’s wrong with a simple multi-plug
extension cable, and hitting the power switch to that after you power off?
Standby power is then zero.

George.

Subject: [access-uk] Anyone using Intellipanel?

This afternoon I saw a power strip that turns off computer periferals
automatically when you turn off your PC thus claiming to save power
"intelligently". Anyone used one of these? There's an Intelliplug too for
powering just two devices as opposed to the seven the Intellipanel handles.
My only quible is that in standby mode the device itself consumes, if my
calculations are correct, 100 watts or so. that's quite a lot so I wonder what
with the cost of buying the unit and running it whether savings are that great.
