people were coming home to bills of thousands of pounds if i remember. now my ex next door neighbour is married to a thai lady and when they go to thailand they tend to get a cheap pay as you go sim for the phone while they're there.

Mike - I think because of the huge bills people were running up, often not being aware of it, the law was changed, and providers have to notify customers now of their usage, and be more transparent about possible charges. I am unclear if, when travelling in the Euro zone, if it is ever cheaper to use roaming over one's provider -

Andy,

Not sure about any other provider and haven't been abroad for a few years but with Vodafone it always used to be that roaming was automatically activated when you connect to a foreign network and you get charged for incoming calls and texts as well as outgoing. And the bills can, or used to, take a month or two to show the roaming charges.

I have been with Vodafone for eighteen years so don't know about other providers.

Hi all -
Looking around the T-Mobile website for info on the above, they advise
to turn off Roaming when abroad, so as not to incur charges. They also
say that having Roaming turned on in the UK does not cost. I feel I
don't properly understand about Roaming. What point is there to it in
the UK, and when abroad, if it is on, does it mean that I would get
charged whatever is the going rate in that country?
When abroad, T-Mobile sell up front, waht they call Boosters, which
allow so much data useage, such as 3mb for a quid, that has just a 24
hour life, I assume this is a better deal than leaving Roaming turned
on, using the local providers? -
