Andy,
Not sure about any other provider and haven't been abroad for a few
years but with Vodafone it always used to be that roaming was
automatically activated when you connect to a foreign network and you
get charged for incoming calls and texts as well as outgoing. And the
bills can, or used to, take a month or two to show the roaming charges.
I have been with Vodafone for eighteen years so don't know about other
providers.
