I would advise you leave Any DVD running as I have experienced some skipping with a couple of discs. The other advantage is that discs will appear region free to your computer.

Remember that any DVD is constantly updated to cope with the copy protection found on newer discs.

No. So long as you have a DVD inserted you should be fine.
