Thanks for the help. I have since disabled the plug-in, and now it says "AVG e-mail scanner is not fully functional", so I assume that it's turned off now. Is this what I expected? Thanks! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Catherine Turner" <catherineturner2000@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Chris,

Hmmmm well I would find it odd/puzzling that a component isn't working when it should be, which would lead me to check the rest of the program is working properly.

But, personally I wouldn't worry about it not checking e-mail for viruses. I switched off the e-mail scanner quite some time ago and when I recently had to reinstall AVG I didn't bother installing the e-mail scanner. This was because ages ago I had a problem with corrupted mail boxes, and after reading about it, I came to the conclusion that having an anti virus scanner checking e-mail could have been a factor in this. Plus, the resident shield should pick up anything dodgey in any case. So I view the e-mail scanner as at best unnecessary and at worst problematic, and don't bother with it.

Subject: [access-uk] Antivirus and Gmail

Hi all,
I use AVG Free as my antivirus, and I retrieve my Gmail e-mails through Outlook Express. I seem to have a few doubts on security. It appears that by default the E-mail scanner built into AVG Free is not checking for viruses for both incoming and outgoing messages, even though the component is active. Should I be really concerned, or am I just paranoid? What are your opinions please? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!
