Actually a lot of people behind routers didn't get the Blaster worm because they used NAT, and discarded all incoming connections with no entry in the NAT table - i.e, all unsolicited connections. While this is not a substitute for a firewall these days, it stopped the worm quite well back then.

I think one of the best things they did in SP2 was have the firewall turned on by default.
I don't believe a hardware router would have caught the likes of blaster.
I also don't believe any solution is full proof, but I do believe in layered protection.

also, once a port is open, any program can use it if all you have is a hardware firewall where as a software firewall can block aon an application specific basis so the 2 are necessary.

Steve, you are correct about the software firewall, however, what the router
doesn't stop is the outgoing connections from applications that may be installed (either by you or through some spyware), which is why I think you either need a software firewall or really good spyware software installed on
the machine in addition to antivirus software.
I currently use Sophos for antivirus, and Webroot for spyware checking. So far, with only the dedicated firewall we have here, on all our machines we have touch wood not had any trouble, although the firewall blocks around 10mb of inbound traffic per day (mostly port scans and the like).
The Windows XP firewall can also stop quite a few applications from accessing the Internet if it thinks they are problematic, and it is quite configurable in this regard.

I don't use a software firewall, I let my router do it, and it is quite adequate, in fact it is better, because it stealths all the ports, except the ones you specifically open. I don't believe you need to drag your machine down with a software firewall, if you have a good one in your router.

NOD32 as av, zonealarm or kerio for firewall.
Even if you have a router, it is important to have a software firewall of some variety.

I am thinking of going away from my current internet security provider, Symantec, after hearing that Nis 2007 isn't accessible with jaws. Any thoughts on this? Anyone tried it? If this is indeed the case, can anyone suggest a good anti virus and firewall package which works with jaws? I have heard nod 32 is good anti virus software, if you remember to turn off graphics in the setup process. What would those in the know rate as a good firewall to go with this? I tried looking at Microsoft one care, but that's only available in the US and I'm in the UK. I would be grateful for any ideas people may have. Thanks.
