There is an Android e-mail list and all I learned for my Apple was through these lists and people kindly sharing their knowledge. ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Lomas" <w.d.lomas@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hello to all
It is a shame there is no getting started with android book available, just that there is with iPhone, to teach new users how to use the basic android applications on a stock android phone. I would like to look at the Moto G, but as I'm so used to an iPhone, I'm unsure as to how I get started. Especially, when using applications like Facebook, twitter, email, the web, and other areas.

Hi,

Are you saying Kingsoft is accessible then? I haven't tried it but if you are right I will give it a whirl.

Hi
Is there a list for Android or anywhere we can see a list of accessible
Apps? Especially looking for ones which take notes, etc. like a Word
Processing package.

Hi listers,

Quite so. It is worthwhile gathering as much info about the various devices.
Mention was made of the Galaxy S3 Mini: It does not seem to accept an otg
adapter and so cannot be used with a usb keyboard. Connected to an Amazon
Basics bluetooth keyboard it also seems not to function either.

Hth,

Mike

Just because you've tried couple of devices and they did not work you can't claim that it "never" works. Is android accessibilitty perfect? Sure is not. Should be a better/faster way to turn on access? Sure there should be. The 2
finger double tap works when setting up a new phone. Not sure what device
you used and the speach kept cutting out or didn't read what you wanted it
to. With android you have a choice of devices and though some might work
better than others and one might need to be careful which to choose, that's certainly not a reason for android to not be considered as an option for a blind person. I think rather than bashing android, more needs to be done to help people make having an informed decision and help people choose a right
android device.

I'm not really convinced with that mehtod of turning accessibility on. I
tried a friend/s Samsung S3 Mini from the setup screen and it didn't do
anything. I tried to get my daughter to turn Talkback on her S3 Mini and
kept on getting a error message about setting the right language when the
phone was purchased here in the UK. This is why people just don't trust the Android OS because it doesn't do what it says on the tin I'm afraid. Another
example is when I bought a tablet and Talk back would read what I was
touching and then it would cut out and read nothing. I mean how bloody
shabby is that. I'm honestly trying to give Android the benefit of doubt put
these incidents don't help a jot. Large propotion of people turn to IOS
because it's trusted and Voiceover is well polished. Another words it does what it says on the tin. I would love to promote Android as well as IOS but
how can I recommend something that just never works as it should!

Hi Mo,

Turn it on, wait for about 20 seconds, then put two fingers on the
screen slightly apart. After about four secs it will come up talking.
Job done.

Hello.

Its worth remembering that that price is for the 8GB version sim free.
the 16GB version will set you back £160 sim free from phones 4 u.
Steve, how do you launch the accessible setup on this handset? it
would be fantastic if we can have full access to the device out of the
box.

all the best,

Mo.

Richard,

The Moto G is already available in Phones4U at 119.00 with a 10
pounds top up or 135 pounds Sim-Free.

We will hopefully be selling it from December, price to be announced,
though
not quite that cheap. It will be sub-200 pounds though.

This is a very worthy phone for the price, has 4.3 out of the box and
will have 4.4 Kitkat on it by January 2014.

I am told by Someone who already owns it that it is accessible even
to the point of setting it up with no sight, so Motorola haven't
skinned it that much either. It is almost a pure Google phone.

It is not 4G compatible, though for the price, this is to be expected.

Well worth a look.

All the best

I think that Android is definately worthy of consideration over Apple
at the moment, I have heard that Google are about to launch a new
handset since taking over Motorola Mobile, called the Moto G. And the
word is it will retail in the UK for £135, a fraction of the cost of
an iPhone. I have no idea of how good the phone is though, but will
be listening closely before upgrading from my iPhone 4s next year.
