yes, the battery has been removed completely.

Is there a way to just turn off the error beeps aboutthe battery being missing/not not charging or whatever the unit is complaining about?

I will very definitley not be able to have the motherboard replaced.

From reading the manual that came with the unit, I understand that there is a desktop and portable version of the BT 340. Since mine came with a really nice backpack, I assume that mine is the portable unit . the manual also mentioned the portable units emitting error beeps when the battery is flat or low on charge. Can this just be turned off so that I can then use the unit just like the desktop model?

Thanks much.

Doris

Hi.
As promised spoke with our engineer today, he is going to see if we can get any parts for the display as it sounds very much as through the main circuit board may have become faulty. Did I see you say on the list earlier that the display is now working on mains only? If it is then I'd suggest you completely remove the battery to save any further damage from being caused. Allow me to pursue this a little further and I"ll write again on Monday when I have more information.
Very best regards.

I am a speech user for the most part but do want to have a Braille display if at all possible for proofreading or translation work.

As a friend of mine said, these older Alva Braille displays are "built like tanks" and just very solid pieces of workmanship. I would hate to have to give up the unit! It is such a neat piece of equipment and the electroonic Braille is just so much easier to read than paper Braille.

That was quite sufficient for my Braille reading needs. We moved several times over the last few years and it had been a while since I had used the display at all. When we now arrived in our current apartment and unpacked and attached the display to my computer, I found that it did not work at all. We opened the display and found that the battery was corroded, i.e. had begun to leak a little bit of the battery fluid. fortunately nothing had gotten on the display's mother board and other innards yet. My husband performed a batterectomy and we hoped I would be able to use the display working directly off the wall charger. this is not working, however. The unit sits there and emits complaining beeps and also displays some code on the display.
