Yes, you can. Apple do their own, but lots of others work, I'm pretty sure, but 
haven't used anything but the Apple one.

0by Have you selected Alex as your default dialect? You need to go into
0by settings/general/accessibility/Voiceover/speech in order to do that.  If you
0by have and it doesn't work, try restarting Voiceover, perhaps by using triple
0by click home if you have set this up to load and unload Voiceover.
