Presumably the Sale of Goods Act 1893, which protects you if an item is not "fit for purpose". This seems more important than the makers' warranty, and your contract is with the seller.

I think Richard was referring to consumer rights when he mentioned the 6 years. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Cairns" <jackie.cairnsplace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2012 9:58 AMSubject: [access-uk] Re: Administrator eyes DVR firesale after TVonics collapse . Reg HardwareHi RichardIndeed, some items have more generous warranties. In fact, if you purchase this box from John Lewis, they offer a two-year guarantee as with all theirproducts. Reg HardwareJacky, Actually quite a bit longer than 12 months. That's just the periodadvertised by many retailers. Last time I looked, think the booklet was suggesting that a period of up to 6 years may apply in certain circs. With the tips posted on this list to help search or retune, and using it for the EPG or recording something, it's excellent. It's a real pity about the whole thing going down the tubes, and those who have lost jobsas a result.I urge anyone considering one of these units to go for it if they can, given its accessibility. Reg Hardware That's a real shame. I was hoping that they'd pull through again, both for the staff and for the product. Although I don't have one of these, I've downloaded the update and speech software just in case I get one that doesn't have it installed. Reg Hardware Hi Looks v. bad now, up s*** creek without a paddle. http://www.reghardware.com/2012/06/27/administrator_looking_to_sell_of f_tvon ics_kit/ Administrator eyes DVR firesale after TVonics collapse UK DVR maker TVonics has gone into administration. The maker of Freeview HD recorders, including the DTR-Z500HD <http://www.reghardware.com/2011/04/30/review_dvrs_tvonics_dtr_z500hd/ > and DTR-HD500 <http://www.reghardware.com/2010/10/22/review_dvr_tvonics_dtr_hd500/> , was placed in the hands of Bell Advisory on 12 June. And, though it's been in administration before and survived, back in 2008, things don't look good this time round. A spokesman confirmed today that the staff have been laid off; several have already found new jobs. The administrator is also looking to dispose of the stock, so it seems unlikely that the company will be sold as a going concern, or that there will be any further support for people who have already bought the products. TVonics DTR-Z500HD Freeview HD DVR<http://regmedia.co.uk/2011/10/11/tvonics_dtr-z500hd_freeview_hd_dv r.jpg> Punters looking for a bargain may be able to snap one of TVonics' DVRs up if the eventual buyer of the stock passes on their savings - and with handy features like BBC iPlayer support on Freeview HD, a built in HDMI switch and an uncluttered interface, the kit could be worth having if the price is right. But there won't be any warranty support beyond your usual rights with the retailer. Folk who've bought already and have problems will similarly have to fall back on their consumer rights, rather than hopingfor any fixes.adding "our customers are able to call our Helpline if they need support."One group of users that may be feeling particularly hard hit is the partially sighted. It was only a couple of months ago that TVonics, working with the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB), launched a version of the DTR-HD500 with text-to-speech <http://www.reghardware.com/2012/05/03/tvonics_rnib_launch_speech_synt hesisi ng_freeview_dvr/> , allowing the box to read the programme guide and menus to users. A spokesperson for the RNIB told The Register: "The company has been a great support in our bid to bring about a sea-change in accessibility," and confirmed that the box is still available from the organisation <http://www.rnib.org.uk/shop/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=tv060 1> ,Firmware to add text-to-speech functionality to existing TVonics units was still available on the TVonics site <http://www.tvonics.com/product_support/> at time of writing, but we'd advise you to grab it fast if you want it.
