Hi Mike,
I even get talking about coffee machines, but when it strays to what kinds of
pods you use, I don't think that is really access tech, do you?
All the best
Steve

Subject: [access-uk] Re: Access-uk - Policy & Guidelines (Let's hope this
doesn't arrive blank!)
I don't wish to sound as if I'm being facetious, because I'm really not trying
to be. But interpreting the first couple of points of the guidelines strictly
literally would exclude much greater than 50% of the traffic on this list.
Again, it's our access to technology and it's use rather than actual access
technology that gets discussed on here more often than any products
specifically aimed at the VI.
I suggest all we can do is take the guidelines in the spirited they are
intended. Maybe talking about miserable bus drivers (which I have been guilty
of in the past) is off-topic, but talking about whether a washing machine you
can buy in Curry's has only touch-sensitive screen controls and digital
displays and how it is totally inaccessible should be OK.
Just to pull an example out of the air which has not (to my knowledge) been
discussed.

Do points 1 and 2 in the guidelines mean that I can't reply to a post
asking about audio editing by recommending a Windows program called
'TotalRecorder'?
I would do this on here because TotalRecorder, while it is not
strictly speaking, access technology, it does have very good keyboard
accessibility and the developers have kept accessibility in mind when
writing it.
So, keeping strictly in line with points one and two, we can't talk
about Microsoft Windows at all because it is definitely not "Access
Technology".
Ipso facto, if we CAN talk about Windows, then we can talk about the
accessibility of OTHER mainstream products like coffee machines and
DAB radios.
I would strongly recommend that "access technology" be changed to
"the accessibility of technology", or "access to technology", since
we need to make use of so much mainstream gadgetry in our every day lives.
If every post that does not refer to products and services relating
specifically to accessibility was removed, the list would be very
quiet indeed.

Policy & Guidelines
The revised guidelines below are designed to outline in detail the code of
conduct which is expected from its members.
Please be sure that you understand these but feel free to contact the Group
Owner if you want further clarification.
1 This list is primarily set up for UK users of Access Technology to
discuss any technical problems which are related to either the hardware or
software they are using.
2 Members can discuss access products in relation to mainstream software
or hardware.
3 The group is UK based but membership is open to international
subscribers.
4 The group is made up from technology users of all walks of life.
Knowledge and experience is vast amongst its members. It is therefore an
excellent resource for new members and those less experience to be able to
ask questions. Irrespective of your level of knowledge or experience, you
should not be afraid to ask something which you may feel is silly or not
important. Chances are that someone else wanted to know the same thing or
perhaps didn't think of it.
5 Personal comments or remarks of a slanderous or derogatory nature
directed to any of the group's members will not be tolerated.
6 Grievances between members should be directed to the list owner and
not aired on list.
7 The list owner reserves the right to terminate or ban any member who
contravenes the guidelines despite previous warnings and, without notice.
8 All messages sent to the group should be in plain text.
9 No file attachments are permitted.
10 Try to avoid reply messages such as "me to" and "I thought that".
11 This group is not a platform to air personal grievances against any
one company. For example, minor delays in receiving software or goods.
12 Please keep subject lines on topic. Where the subject content
changes, please amend the subject heading before sending.
Advertising Policy
The following guidelines should be closely followed:
1 Blatant advertising is not in any way permitted on this list. This
can be defined as advertising complete outlines of the products and
services which a company can offer along with prices.
2 No company or product press releases are to be sent.
3 Information however is important for this group's membership and small
notices no larger than one screen of text can be sent outlining briefly the
product or announcement and directing people to a website address so they
can have the choice of whether or not they want to read about it.
4 If you consider that your posting can be interpreted as an
announcement, please put ANNOUNCEMENT at the beginning of the subject line.
5 Companies or individuals who overstep this will firstly be given a
warning and asked to ensure this doesn't happen again.
6 Where step 5 is ignored, the company or individual will be removed
without notice.
Please follow these guidelines as best as possible and make the group an
even better resource.
