Hi Alison
When I try to open the file it asks me what I want to use to open it with
and nothing I have works. I can't go back to the original post as that has
been deleted. I've tries ot change the extension and that is not working
either. I'm now stcck.

I'm no expert, Roger, but the two things I would try is firstly to try "save
as" and then choose text in the offered formats.
If that doesn't work, find the original file in your deleted items and
re-read it there and this time, if you still want to save it, save it as a
text file.

I use Outlook 2016 as my mail client. I recently received a post containing
information I needed. I saved it into my Documents folder for later study.
When I went to open it later I found I had not changed the format and it was
an .eml extension which I don't seem able to open. Can someone help me
please.
