[access-uk] Accessible batch photo resize application please?

Hi,
I'm sure many would agree that access to graphics-related tasks has got to
be one of the more challenging aspects of being VI. Up until now I've been
fortunate to be able to use packages such as Photoshop, etc.
However, now partly due to screen reader incompatibility and partly due to
my systems still recovering from major intensive care treatment 'grin' I was
wondering if anyone could suggest something to help with the following.
I'm looking for a free application that can batch resize some photos I want
to send to friends and family by e-mail but maintain their aspect ratio.
I've come across a few that do the former, but they all leave the photos
looking like the photographer was squinting at them through a very long
telescope (pardon the analogy).
If anyone can help that would be great. Also, if anyone here is familiar
with graphics, what size would you consider reasonable for landscape
photographs originally taken at 5MP (2536x1944 pixels) for sending by e-mail
but still looking decent?
