The range is supposed to be around 1cm, but it rarely is.
They would have to
be practically touching your card with their phone to be
able to read it.
Since it doesn't give away any more information than is
printed on the card,
I don't think this is any greater a risk than of someone
rifling through
your wallet without you knowing. Besides, all the liability
for any loss is
on the bank.
