Thanks Sandra. So the loss of speech is not specific to Hal, or to my system.  
I think it 
worth mentioning to Alasdair King as he seems very anxious to produce a 
workable yet 
simple program. At my suggestion he has already put a volume control into it, 
so that if 
you want to hear a little of an item before deciding to save it you can do so 
without 
having to choose between adjusting your speaker volume or risking being 
deafened by 
the speech synthesiser output if using a single sound card. 

I downloaded Ipodder 2.0 a few days ago but delayed installing it until I was 
certain that 
I really needed it.  There was a good review on ACBRADio Main Menu for 27 
April.
